Telephone numbers in Mobius are administered by the National Communications Institute of Mobius and are almost similar to telephone numbers in the North American Numbering Plan.
The NCI divides the territories of its members into numbering plan areas (NPAs) which are encoded numerically with a three-digit telephone number prefix, commonly called the area code. Each telephone is assigned a seven-digit telephone number unique only within its respective plan area. The telephone number consists of a three-digit central office code and a four-digit station number. The combination of an area code and the telephone number serves as a destination routing address in the public switched telephone network (PSTN). For international call routing, the NCI has been assigned the international calling code 422 by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The NCI conforms with ITU Recommendation E.164, which establishes an international numbering framework.
History[edit | edit source]
Since at least the 1940s, the use of telephones became widespread all across Mobius. As a direct consequence of the economic union that covers all of the archipelago, the Telephony Institute of Mobius (now the NCI) was established to standardize phone numbers. It was until the 1970s when the numbering plan became what it is today with the country code of 422. In fact, there were some areas that still used old crank phones well into the early 1990s. In this case, one would have to turn the crank four times in order to get the operator in order to complete the call.
Numbering plan[edit | edit source]
The numbering plan is almost the same as the NANP except for the country code which is +422 instead of +1.
The NCI number format may be summarized in the notation NPA-NXX-xxxx:
Component | Name | Number ranges | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
NPA | Numbering Plan Area Code | Allowed ranges: [2–9] for the first digit, and [0-9] for the second and third digits. When the second and third digits of an area code are the same, that code is called an easily recognizable code (ERC). ERCs designate special services; e.g., 888 for toll-free service. | Each state of Mobius has its own area code. |
NXX | Central Office (exchange) code | Allowed ranges: [2–9] for the first digit, and [0–9] for both the second and third digits (however, in geographic area codes the third digit of the exchange cannot be 1 if the second digit is also 1). | Often considered part of a subscriber number. The three-digit Central Office codes are assigned to a specific CO serving its customers, but may be physically dispersed by redirection, or forwarding to mobile operators and other services. |
xxxx | Subscriber Number | [0–9] for each of the four digits. | This unique four-digit number is the subscriber number or station code. |
For example, 404-235-5678 is a valid telephone number with area code 404, central office prefix 235, and line number 5678. The number 404-911-5678 is invalid, because the central office code must not be in the form N11. 404-159-2653 is invalid, because the office code must not begin with 1. 123-234-5678 is invalid, because the NPA must not begin with 0 or 1.
The country calling code for Mobius is 422. In international format, a Mobian number should be listed as +4224045550100, where 404 is an area code (Angel Island).
Each three-digit area code has a capacity of 7,919,900 telephone numbers:
- NXX may begin only with the digits [2–9], providing a base of 8 million numbers: (8 × 100 × 10000) .
- However, the last two digits of NXX cannot both be 1, to avoid confusion with the N11 codes.
- Despite the widespread usage of NXX 555 for fictional telephone numbers—see 555 (telephone number)—today, the only such numbers now specifically reserved for fictional use are 555-0100 through 555-0199, with the remaining 555 numbers released for actual assignment as information numbers (subtract 100).
- In individual geographic area codes, several other NXX prefixes are generally not assigned: the home area code(s), adjacent domestic area codes and overlays, area codes reserved for future relief nearby, industry testing codes (generally NXX 958 and 959) and special service codes (such as NXX 950 and 976).

Dialing procedure[edit | edit source]
The amount of numbers to be dialed depends on whether the caller is placing a local call, a short-distance call, or a long-distance call.
For example, suppose someone wants to call the office of the Seigneur of Angel Island:
- If they are calling within Angel Island, they would dial 5914129
- If they are calling outside Angel Island but within Mobius, they would dial 4045914129
- In some areas within Mobius, they would dial 04224045914129. However, this practice is discouraged by the NCI since this is unnecessary.
- If they are calling outside Mobius, they would dial the international prefix of the originating country and then they would dial +4224045914129. (In the NANP, they would dial 0114224045914129)
